How to Choose a Content Management System

With so many great open source solutions, selecting the right content management system for the job is not a simple decision. The selection is made based on many factors including:

  • The size of the site and number of editors
  • Necessary functionality, like forums, polls, e-commerce, etc.
  • Who the site editors will be, and the user interface

A brief description of the top Open Source Content Management Systems

Of the many choices, there are three that continually win awards and praise from designers and developers:

  • Drupal is most commonly used by Ad Agencies in the Twin Cities area. It is very powerful and has a thriving community behind it
  • Joomla is as powerful as Drupal. The two are always in competition and there is really no clear winner. Joomla appears to have more modules and functionality, but that changes all the time, so it becomes of matter of preference.
  • Wordpress has always been very powerful blogging software, and is rapidly expanding to the point that it could be a contender for a full featured site.
